We had our air conditioner replaced last summer and we have been very happy with every step of the process. From the initial visit for the estimate and choices to the final installation. They were extremely professional and courteous each visit to the house and also informative of what they were doing including how to maintain equipment through the year. The price was competitive and we compared them to 4 other companies before deciding not based only on price but also their professional interactions/service. We just had a 1 year follow up to check the equipment prior to the summer season and again they were very polite.

I’m giving two stars because a lot of the workers were nice, but that’s really where the positives end. This was honestly a nightmare and I’m still dealing with the aftermath.Communication was terrible from the start. I could barely get ahold of anyone, even while they were actively working at my house. Calls and messages went unanswered, and I was usually stuck trying to get updates through the office.

There were also a lot of issues with how the job was handled. They damaged my laundry tub and still charged me for a new one. The worst part is they sprayed sewage water onto my belongings in the basement, which caused thousands of dollars in damage and ended up creating a pest problem.

What really stands out is how responsive they were when it came time to get paid, but once the job was done, it was almost impossible to get them to come back or fix anything—even after I went to their office in person.

I’ve worked with a lot of contractors in Pittsburgh and have never left a bad review before, but I would definitely think twice before using this company.

See videos of water line and gas line leaks. See videos of shoddy work. They charged me over $3800 for poor work quality, and could not be reached after 8pm for the emergency gas leak that they caused.

I hired McVay aka "McShoddy" Plumbing to excavate the sewer line beneath the old laundry connection, reconnected the existing 4-inch terra-cotta piping, and extended new PVC piping out of the floor near the new laundry tub area.

They installed a separate standpipe for the washing machine with a proper air admittance valve, along with a dedicated line for the laundry tub. The area was backfilled and the cement floor was patched.

McVay Plumbing then installed my customer-supplied stainless steel single bowl sink with faucet. The water lines were updated to accommodate two new shut-off valves for the washer (hot and cold) and new emergency valves for the new faucet style.
The laundry layout was reconfigured by shifting the laundry tub close to the man door leading into the garage, with the washing machine positioned next to it and the dryer to the right of the washing machine.

***Update / Issues Experienced***
This morning, my wife went to use the washing machine for the first time and discovered that the new work had a major leak from the ceiling. McVay Plumbing sent out a supervisor to address the issue.

This evening, while my wife was using the dryer, we smelled gas. I tested the gas line by putting soap on it, and as the video shows, bubbles were forming, confirming a gas leak. I called for emergency dispatch shortly after 8pm. After escalating with their AI agent and being transferred to an offshore “customer service department,” they told us they would dispatch someone that night. I have received no follow-up.

In addition, while waiting for them to arrive, I noticed the shoddy work they did hooking up the dryer exhaust vent (see attached picture). This is a serious safety hazard because the dryer exhaust must properly vent carbon monoxide outside the home.

I totally regret using this company because they charge a premium quality price for shoddy work.

After many calls/hours from this franchise telling me they are running behind schedule, I decided to try McVay for the 1st time. I received a call back from Rob. Used them thru Lowe’s for A/C replacement. Timely, knowledgeable, Professional, and Friendly. They spent around 6-7 hours replacing a 20+ year old Rheem A/C unit, Lines, and Coil. Hauled away the old one. Made sure my furnace fired up back up, showed me what they replaced and explained the new safety features and warranty before leaving. I will be using them again this Fall (2026) to replace old furnace. The Installers did a great job (didn’t catch their names) John (friendly as well) handled my quote. All in all great company

Changing my review because I am honestly shocked about how much they charge for small jobs. I had them come to do a few simple jobs: install a new kitchen drain and a new toilet fill valve. I provided all the parts. So, they were supposed to come between 12 and 4. Showed up at 3:45, so I stared at that toilet valve kit all day. The package promised easy installation, and I was tempted to try myself, but they were already coming, so I thought I might as well let them do it. When I got the estimate for both of these jobs, it was much more than I’d been expecting, so I just decided to install the pump myself. I watched one video and installed it in under 5 minutes. They were going to charge close to $200 for this. $200 for a 5 minute job that a total amateur did herself after watching a single short on YouTube. Unreal.

Don’t bother calling if you have an emergency - it’s a complete waste of time. I can’t comment on actual quality of work because we couldn’t get anyone to show up as promised. Long story short, we are currently experiencing a major plumbing problem at our home that renders both bathrooms useless at the moment. We called at 7:00pm and were told we were put on the schedule to have an appointment the same night and that dispatch would reach out 30-45 minutes before a technician’s arrival. By a little after 9:00, there was still no additional communication, so we called back in. Got told basically the same thing - no update, appointment still shows scheduled for tonight. So we continue to wait…still nothing a little after 10, so we call back again and have the same conversation. It’s frustrating when you call in because you have to fight through a virtual assistant to get to a person, but you cannot apparently directly speak to dispatch unless they initiate the call. We called again at 11:30 when there was still no updates and we requested multiple times to talk to dispatch just for a rough idea of what was going on. On this last call, we were finally told that basically daily service stops at 8:00pm, so now we wouldn’t be seen until tomorrow. If that is indeed the case and you do not do emergency work as advertised, please lead with that so consumers can make educated decisions and alternate arrangements with honest and transparent companies.

Changing my review because I am honestly shocked about how much they charge for small jobs. I had them come to do a few simple jobs: install a new kitchen drain and a new toilet fill valve. I provided all the parts. So, they were supposed to come between 12 and 4. Showed up at 3:45, so I stared at that toilet valve kit all day. The package promised easy installation, and I was tempted to try myself, but they were already coming, so I thought I might as well let them do it. When I got the estimate for both of these jobs, it was much more than I’d been expecting, so I just decided to install the pump myself. I watched one video and installed it in under 5 minutes. They were going to charge close to $200 for this. $200 for a 5 minute job that a total amateur did herself after watching a single short on YouTube. Unreal.

Don’t bother calling if you have an emergency - it’s a complete waste of time. I can’t comment on actual quality of work because we couldn’t get anyone to show up as promised. Long story short, we are currently experiencing a major plumbing problem at our home that renders both bathrooms useless at the moment. We called at 7:00pm and were told we were put on the schedule to have an appointment the same night and that dispatch would reach out 30-45 minutes before a technician’s arrival. By a little after 9:00, there was still no additional communication, so we called back in. Got told basically the same thing - no update, appointment still shows scheduled for tonight. So we continue to wait…still nothing a little after 10, so we call back again and have the same conversation. It’s frustrating when you call in because you have to fight through a virtual assistant to get to a person, but you cannot apparently directly speak to dispatch unless they initiate the call. We called again at 11:30 when there was still no updates and we requested multiple times to talk to dispatch just for a rough idea of what was going on. On this last call, we were finally told that basically daily service stops at 8:00pm, so now we wouldn’t be seen until tomorrow. If that is indeed the case and you do not do emergency work as advertised, please lead with that so consumers can make educated decisions and alternate arrangements with honest and transparent companies.

McVAY = VERY IMPRESSIVE! The buyer's sewer line inspection revealed 2 breaks. These required repair. Through the estimating process the fact that this was a CSL, a sewer line shared between 2 or more neighbors, came to light, not uncommon for Pittsburgh. Further revealed, there was no housetrap. In spite of these and other complexities, the estimate was presented with full confidence in the repair which offered minimal digging, installation of a whole house trap, new PVC fittings, and 35 ft of 6” diameter cured-in-place liner. Shout out to Adam! Well done on the estimate of work! All of the technicians I met on the job were personable, helpful, hard working and …impressive. The McVay team managed the inspection process with Allegheny Health Department Plumbing Inspections seamlessly. All the work was done in a timely manner as various crews were brought in for each stage of the process. The site supervisor was not satisfied with the quality of the finish work, the height of the fixtures protruded above the poured concrete sidewalk by an unacceptable margin. Chris wouldn't sign off on the job until that was made right. It was made right. Way to go Chris! That’s the kind of contractor team I want to work with. A team that makes sure the work is done right before walking off the job.

There was one little hiccup at the end in my opinion. Even as of 1 hour before the sale closing, I had not heard from anyone who could verify for me how the final inspection video clearly demonstrated that the repairs of the two breaks in the line were actually accomplished. It was as though the McVay team thought this was intuitive or that I should simply trust them because they said it was so. The AGHD inspection simply proved that it met county requirements for what was installed; it didn’t guarantee that actual repairs were made. (It’s a very odd process actually, IMO.) Finally…Jake got on the phone with me and walked me through the repair inspection video so that I could have full confidence that I was offering the buyer of my property a verifiably fully repaired sewer line. Way to go Jake!

So that’s my one suggestion for the McVay team. Please consider having a “closer” on hand at the end of the process, someone who is familiar with the project and can explain exactly how the work done met the needs of the project. Perhaps it should even be Adam, the estimator?

For the potential client in need of sewer line repair, working from sewer line scope videos with their unreliable foot counters is very challenging. It is not easy to figure out what’s going on underground from these. I found McVay easy to work with and amenable to being held accountable for their work and to my satisfaction. Bottom line is when you get up in the morning and you notice sewage creeping up into things you shouldnt have on the floor, you freak out. Then you call the only company you have ever dealt with hoping they can help today. I called McVay and the first person said he would put me on the list. Ten minutes later a young lady called and said the have someone that can be there shortly. I was feeling pretty good about that. Then almost immediately the plumber called and gave me a specific time that he would be here and he was. A short time later after he determined the problem was in my main line he jetted and snaked and everything let go and was back to normal. So within a two hour period my freaking out was reduced to appreciation for the company, the office people and the technician. I recommend them for this kind of work and for everything they do. I think they have a good company with good people and they are probably good at all of it.

McVay worked with our Sewer Line Insurance company to ensure that Insurance paid their part and we paid only what the policy stated was our part of the work. From what I could find online the repair cost about as average as it could be. Our inducer motor had broken, (after 17 years,) and the new one had to be the name brand for the brand "American Standard," which is what contributed to our job costing slightly on the higher side of the average cost. Stuff like that can't be avoided sometimes, unfortunately.

This is the second time that we have used McVay and can't recommend them enough. We had to have our sewer lines replaced. The team from McVay (Lee, Eli, Joe, Caden and Adam) got the work done quickly, neatly, and were a pleasure to work with. The work with McVay is always good. The price was kind of steep I felt but I needed to have a dependable company because reliable plumbers can be challenging to find.

I had some minor issues that I addressed with them which they resolved.

The scope of work:

McVay Plumbing excavated the sewer line beneath the old laundry connection, reconnected the existing 4-inch terra-cotta piping, and extended new PVC piping out of the floor near the new laundry tub area. The excavated area was approximately 2x3 so this was not a long run at all...

They installed a separate standpipe for the washing machine with a proper air admittance valve along with a dedicated line for the laundry tub. The area was backfilled and the cement floor was patched.

McVay Plumbing then installed the stainless steel single bowl sink with faucet that I supplied. The water lines were updated to accommodate two new shut-off valves for the washer (hot and cold) and new emergency valves for the new faucet style.

The laundry layout was reconfigured by shifting the laundry tub close to the man door leading into the garage, with the washing machine positioned next to it and the dryer to the right of the washing machine.

The price was $3,860.

I made a 1:00pm appointment for someone to give me an estimate for a new furnace. The (male) McVay phone agent & I discussed whether 12:30 or 1:00 would be be better for me; he said "whatever works best for you" so I settled on 1:00pm.

On the given day, no one showed-up by 1:15pm, so I called McVay & eventually got a female phone agent. She proceeded to tell me that my appointment was actually from 1:00pm - 4:00pm, which was news to me. I was willing to re-schedule, so I asked for a first-in-the-morning appointment & she said that McVay won't do that, so I decided not to use them.

When I pre-schedule HVAC service in advance I always request a "first appointment", as I have with several different local companies over the years in the North Hills area. So it seems that if I wanted to do business with McVay, I'd not be able to get that.
I understand that if I call-in for a problem, such as my air conditioning wasn't putting out cold air - - that's an emergency type of service call & I'd expect to be given a time span appointment rather than a specific time, and accept it as a normal situation.

I've already had two other local HVAC estimates at my house recently & both were willing to (and did) arrive at ......................... 1:00pm, so it doesn't seem like a big ask, but apparently it is for McVay. For what it's worth, they have an office/facility in my ZIP code, so a "first in the morning" appointment wouldn't be like having to drive from New Castle to Uniotown.

But they need to run their business how they feel it best suits their needs, while I have to do business with companies that best fit my needs, so I can't recommend them, no matter how good they might be.
